Sabastian Sawe of Kenya became the first runner in history to complete an official marathon in under two hours.
Sawe won the men's event at the 2026 London Marathon held in London on Saturday, completing the 42.195-kilometer full course in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds.
The time is more than a minute faster than the previous record of 2 hours, 0 minutes and 35 seconds set by Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya in 2023, making him the first athlete in history to achieve the dream mark of "sub-2," completing a full marathon course in under two hours.
Sawe passed the halfway point in 1 hour and 29 seconds, maintaining a world-record pace, and picked up speed in the second half to reach the all-time record.
Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya had previously completed a marathon in under two hours in 2019, but that performance was not recognized as an official record because it was conducted under controlled conditions.
