Billy Donovan is stepping down as head coach of the NBA's Chicago Bulls.
According to the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse on Tuesday (Korea time), Donovan resigned after completing his sixth season with Chicago. He is reported to have stepped down to take responsibility for the team's failure to make the playoffs in the 2025-2026 season.
Donovan made his name by leading the University of Florida to back-to-back NCAA basketball championships in 2006 and 2007. He took over as head coach of the Bulls in 2020 and posted a 226-256 record over six seasons. Chicago failed to reach the playoffs in five of the six seasons Donovan led the team.
This season's poor performance was particularly painful. The Bulls finished with a dismal 31-51 record and missed the playoffs. "We discussed a contract extension with management, but I thought bringing in a new leader would be best for the team," Donovan said.
