Coventry City, the English Championship club where South Korean football prospect Yang Min-hyeok, 20, is on loan, has clinched the Championship title for the first time in 59 years, following their confirmed return to the English Premier League (EPL) after a 25-year absence.
Coventry defeated Portsmouth 5-1 in their home match in Round 44 of the 2025-2026 English Championship at the Coventry Building Society Arena in Coventry, England, on Saturday local time.
Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, took the lead through a Haji Wright header from a corner kick in the 12th minute. In the second half, Ephron Mason-Clark scored twice and Kaine Hayden added another, along with an own goal by Portsmouth defender Regan Poole, sealing the emphatic victory.
With the win, Coventry moved to 89 points, 10 points clear of second-placed Millwall on 79 points, securing the league title regardless of the outcome of their remaining two matches.
It is Coventry's second Championship title and their first since the 1966-1967 season, 59 years ago.
Coventry had already secured promotion to the EPL after drawing 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers in their away match in Round 43 on April 18, guaranteeing at least a second-place finish. It marks their return to the top flight 25 years after being relegated from the EPL as the 19th-placed team in the 2000-2001 season.
However, Yang Min-hyeok was once again left out of the matchday squad. It was his 13th consecutive absence from the squad list.
Ahead of the 2025-2026 season, Yang was loaned from EPL side Tottenham Hotspur to Portsmouth, where he performed well with three goals and one assist in 15 matches over half a season. After being loaned again to Coventry in January this year, he has struggled to earn playing time and has since disappeared entirely from Lampard's plans.
