"Give me five strokes on the front nine and five on the back, ten total." "Does the world's 100th-ranked player get a handicap from the number one on the PGA Tour? Just play straight up."
These are conversations commonly heard at the first tee. Half of this is right, and half is wrong. While it's true that professional tour players don't exchange handicaps, considering the spirit of golf rules, it seems incorrect to say that pure amateurs don't need to give handicaps either—the rules suggest that giving strokes to golfers of different skill levels is appropriate.
The spirit of golf rules refers to the fact that terms like "handicap competition" and related "score calculation methods" appear multiple times. If even a small wager is involved, the round has the character of a "competition" rather than just a friendly game, suggesting that applying handicaps would be appropriate.
As mentioned earlier, handicaps allow golfers of different abilities to compete under fair conditions, making private rounds and tournaments more enjoyable and equitable while helping players improve their skills.
So how can you obtain your own handicap (handicap index)? While the calculation method is somewhat complex, the actual registration process is very simple, thanks to the World Handicap System (WHS) developed by the R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA) and introduced in 2020 as a global standard.

Regardless of where you live, you can receive a handicap index through an authorized golf organization. In Korea, you can register your handicap and obtain a certificate through the Korea Golf Association (KGA) website or app.
Using the app on your smartphone is more convenient. First, search for "Hi Golf" in an app store like the Play Store. Install the app called "H.I.GOLF - KGA Official Handicap," and you're ready to go.

Open the app and log in. You can sign up for a new account or use your Naver ID. Your name and handicap index will appear on the main screen. If you haven't registered any scores or have registered fewer than three, you'll see "N.H" instead of a number, meaning you don't have a handicap index yet.
The minimum number of scores needed to calculate a handicap is three. However, since the calculation is based on "the best 8 scores from your most recent 20 rounds," entering more scores results in a more accurate handicap index. The handicap index is not simply an average of scores. It's calculated as the average of Score Differentials, which factor in the difficulty of each course played (Course Rating and Slope Rating). You just need to know these concepts exist—the system calculates everything automatically, so all you need to do is register your scores.
One important point: when you register a score, it will be reflected in your handicap index at midnight that night. This is because the handicap index represents an "expected score" concept. Also remember that only scores from golf courses certified by the KGA's Course Rating system can be registered. Of approximately 530 golf courses with 18 or more holes operating in Korea, about 270 have received KGA Course Rating certification. The KGA's certification process continues.
Golf's perhaps only drawback is that it's so enjoyable it becomes addictive easily. I hope to share the pleasure of "reading golf," which differs from playing or watching golf.
