Kim Hong-taek made a late charge but fell short of claiming the Asian Tour title.
Kim shot a 2-under-par 69 with six birdies and four bogeys in the final fourth round of the Asian Tour International Series Japan ($2 million purse) at Caledonian Golf Club (par 71) in Chiba, Japan, on Sunday. He finished tied for fifth at 12-under-par 272.
Kim had led through three rounds and was eyeing his second career Asian Tour victory, but was forced to wait for another opportunity. He grabbed birdies on the 2nd and 4th holes but gave back strokes with consecutive bogeys on the 8th and 9th. He picked up a birdie on the 12th but dropped shots again with back-to-back bogeys on the 13th and 14th, unable to gain ground through the middle stretch. Kim closed with three consecutive birdies over the final three holes, but there were no holes left to play.
Travis Smyth of Australia claimed the trophy. He added a 7-under-par round on the day to finish atop the leaderboard at 15-under-par 269, edging co-runners-up Kinoshita Ryosuke of Japan and Pavit Tangkamolprasert of Thailand by one stroke. The winner's prize was $360,000 (approximately 540 million won).
Song Young-han finished tied for 7th at 11-under-par, Jang Yu-bin tied for 19th at 9-under-par, and Ham Jung-woo tied for 29th at 7-under-par.
