"I just spoke with the president."
Bodycam footage has been released showing golf legend Tiger Woods making this statement to a police officer during his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. The Associated Press reported on the 3rd that police bodycam footage from Woods' arrest had been made public, detailing its key contents. Woods was involved in a single-vehicle rollover accident near his home in Florida on the 27th of last month (local time).
Woods tested negative for alcohol at the scene but refused a urine test. Authorities believe he likely caused the accident while driving under the influence of drugs.
The AP reported that "the full phone conversation was not captured on the footage, but Woods said 'thank you so much' and hung up as the officer approached." It remains unclear whether the president Woods referred to was U.S. President Donald Trump.
The bodycam footage also showed Woods in handcuffs, as well as hiccupping, yawning and dozing off in the back seat of a police cruiser. When officers found two pills in his pocket, Woods explained they were "painkillers."
Woods told officers that he "was looking at his phone and changing the radio channel when suddenly there was a 'bang.'" Woods, who was released on bail, said on the 1st that he would "step away from activities and focus on treatment."
Woods is currently dating Vanessa, a former daughter-in-law of President Trump. After Woods' arrest, Trump said, "Woods is close to me. He's a great person, but it's unfortunate that he seems to be going through a difficult time right now."
