Phil Mickelson, 56, will not compete in this year's Masters, the first major golf tournament of the season.
Mickelson announced through his social media on Thursday that "a family health issue" would prevent him from playing in this year's Masters, adding that he would be unable to compete in tournaments "for the time being."
The Masters, the first men's major golf championship of the year, begins next week at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
With Mickelson's withdrawal, both Tiger Woods and Mickelson will be absent from this year's Masters. It marks the first time both players have missed the tournament since Woods made his Masters debut in 1995.
Mickelson, born in 1970, has missed the Masters only four times since his first appearance in 1991 — in 1992, 1994, 2022, and this year.
Mickelson won the Masters three times, in 2004, 2006, and 2010, and finished tied for second in 2023 at the age of 50.
