The Spanish star lost 1-2 (3-6, 7-5, 4-6) to Sebastian Korda (ranked 36th, United States) on Day 5 of the tournament in Miami, Florida, on March 22 local time. The defeat marks Alcaraz's second consecutive early exit, following his semifinal loss at the BNP Paribas Open (total prize money $9,415,725) on March 15.
Alcaraz won this tournament in 2022. His bid to reclaim the title after four years ended with the loss to Korda, who is the younger brother of world No. 2 women's golfer Nelly Korda. Alcaraz still holds a 4-2 advantage in their head-to-head record.
Rival Jannik Sinner (ranked 2nd, Italy) will face Corentin Moutet (ranked 33rd, France) on March 23 for a spot in the round of 16. Even if Sinner wins the tournament, Alcaraz is expected to retain his world No. 1 ranking.
