Ryu started the game at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, on March 14 (Korea time), throwing 40 pitches over 1⅔ innings while allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, 1 strikeout, and 3 earned runs.
In the first inning, Ryu struck out leadoff hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. (San Diego Padres) looking, then retired Ketel Marte (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Juan Soto (New York Mets) on infield groundouts for a three-up, three-down inning.
However, in the second inning, Ryu walked leadoff hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays). Junior Caminero (Tampa Bay Rays) then hit an RBI triple down the left-field line for the first run.
Julio Rodriguez (Seattle Mariners) added another run on a groundout to shortstop. With two outs and runners on first and second following a walk to Agustin Ramirez (Miami Marlins) and a single by Geraldo Perdomo (Arizona Diamondbacks), Tatis Jr. delivered an RBI single to right field.
Ryu was replaced by Noh Kyung-eun (SSG Landers) with two outs and runners on first and second. Noh struck out Marte to prevent further damage.
South Korea trailed the Dominican Republic 0-3 through three innings.
