The United States Golf Association announced Monday that it will award the "Tiger Woods Medal" and "Tiger Woods Trophy" to winners of the US Amateur Championship and US Junior Amateur Championship, respectively.
The newly named awards take effect this year. The 78th US Junior Amateur Championship will be held in July, followed by the 126th US Amateur Championship in August.
"Woods is the only player to win three consecutive titles in both championships," the USGA said. "Inscribing his name on the medal and trophy recognizes his unparalleled record in amateur golf."
Woods won the US Junior Amateur Championship from 1991 to 1993 and captured the US Amateur Championship three straight years from 1994 to 1996. After turning professional, he won the USGA-organized US Open in 2000, 2002, and 2008. His nine USGA championship victories tie Bobby Jones for the most in history.
"Tiger didn't just set records—he established a new standard of excellence," said USGA CEO Mike Whan. "By putting his name on the US Amateur Medal and US Junior Amateur Trophy, we ensure that every future champion will be forever connected to his legacy."
"The USGA and its championships have had a profound impact on my life," Woods said. "The US Junior Amateur and US Amateur Championship were pivotal moments in my development as a golfer and as a person."
He added: "Being recognized in this way is a tremendous honor. I hope it inspires young players to pursue their dreams and cherish the history and values of golf."
