South Korea's women's national football team, seeking its first-ever AFC Women's Asian Cup title, opened group stage play with a dominant 3-0 victory over Iran.
Head coach Shin Sang-woo's squad secured the win at Gold Coast Stadium in Australia on the 2nd in their Group A opener of the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup.
The tournament serves as Asia's premier women's national team competition and doubles as qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Twelve teams are divided into three groups of four for the group stage. The top two finishers from each group, plus the two best third-place teams, advance to the quarterfinal knockout round.
Six Women's World Cup berths are at stake. The four semifinalists and two winners from playoff matches between eliminated quarterfinalists will secure spots at next year's tournament in Brazil.
FIFA-ranked 21st South Korea dominated 68th-ranked Iran from the opening minutes.
Led by veteran Ji So-yun of Suwon FC Women, South Korea built attacks patiently and created numerous scoring chances while pressuring Iran's defense.
Iran's physical defending initially frustrated the Korean attack until the 37th minute breakthrough.
A passing sequence initiated by Ji reached Choi Yu-jung of Hwacheon KSPO, who laid the ball off to onrushing Jang Seul-gi of Gyeongju Hanswon. When Jang's left-footed shot struck the post, Choi Yu-ri of Suwon FC Women converted the rebound with her right foot.
After breaking through, South Korea proved unstoppable. The team recorded nearly 80 percent possession and unleashed over 32 shots.
South Korea extended its lead in the 59th minute when substitute Lee Eun-jung of Molde earned a penalty kick. Kim Hye-ri of Suwon FC Women calmly converted from the spot.
In the 75th minute, Ko Yu-jin of Hyundai Steel headed home a cross from Kim Hye-ri on the right flank for the third goal.
Despite the comfortable margin, South Korea continued pressing. Substitute Casey Yujin Phair of Angel City FC led the charge for additional goals, but the team could not add to its tally.

South Korea faces the Philippines at noon on the 5th and Australia at 6 p.m. on the 8th, all times local to Korea.
