Norway Tops Medal Rankings by Population and GDP at Milan Olympics

Norway, leading the 2026 Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics medal standings with 14 gold, 8 silver, and 9 bronze medals as of February 17 local time, also ranks first in medals per capita and per GDP.

According to Medals per Capita, Norway, with a population of 5.6 million, has won 31 total medals—one medal for every 180,000 people. Dividing its $504 billion GDP by medal count yields approximately $16 billion per medal, also ranking first.

South Korea placed 19th in both per-capita and per-GDP medal rankings, with one medal per 8.6 million people and one medal per $290 billion GDP.

Athlete Who 'Competed' in Utero Returns to Olympics 20 Years Later

Albanian alpine skiing national team member Lara Colturi, competing at this year's Games, first experienced the Olympic stage 20 years ago—from inside her mother's womb.

Born in November 2006, Colturi was in utero when her mother Daniela Ceccarelli competed for Italy's alpine skiing team at the February 2006 Turin Olympics.

Colturi competed in the women's giant slalom on February 15, marking her "second Olympics." She finished in a tie for fourth place, narrowly missing the podium.

"Until now, I've lived as Ceccarelli's daughter, but now I feel like a true Olympian," Colturi said after the race.

Colturi's mother Ceccarelli is an Italian skiing legend who won gold in the women's super-G at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
