The HSBC Women's World Championship, the third event of the LPGA Tour season, is known as the "LPGA Asia Major" due to its field quality rivaling that of major championships.
This year's tournament, held over four days starting February 26 at Sentosa Golf Club's Tanjong Course in Singapore, will feature nine of the world's top 10 players. Only world No. 2 Nelly Korda of the United States will be absent.
Korea's top-ranked players are competing in force, including Kim Hyo-joo, Kim Sei-young, Ryu Hae-ran, Choi Hye-jin, Kim A-lim, Ko Jin-young, Lee So-mi, Lim Jin-hee, Hwang Yu-min, Lee Mi-hyang, Shin Ji-eun, and Yoon Yi-na.

However, two Korean players entered in the HSBC Women's World Championship will miss the Honda LPGA Thailand, the season's second event running four days from February 19 at Siam Country Club in Chonburi, Pattaya. Those players are Hwang Yu-min and Shin Ji-eun. The reason these two players—both competing in the "Asia Major"—are absent comes down to completely different eligibility requirements between the two tournaments.
The HSBC Women's World Championship has three eligibility categories: world ranking, defending champion, and LPGA priority list position. Hwang qualified as defending champion, making her the only rookie in this year's field.
The Honda LPGA Thailand, by contrast, has only two categories: previous year's LPGA tour members and sponsor invitations. This effectively blocks any path for rookies to compete. As defending champion but not an LPGA member last year, "rookie Hwang Yu-min" was given no opportunity to enter.
As a Japanese corporate-sponsored event held in Thailand, invited players skew toward Thai and Japanese competitors. Of 12 invited players, four are Thai and four are Japanese. Two American players also received invitations.

By nationality, the United States leads with 14 players, followed by Japan with 12, Korea with 10, and Thailand with 8. Players from these four countries account for 44 of the 72-player field—well over half.
While Hwang's absence is unfortunate, players from the LPGA's four major nations will compete in similar numbers, staging a "four-kingdom golf battle" in Thailand.
