Germany Extends Luge Dominance With Eighth Consecutive Olympic Gold

Luge powerhouse Germany extended its streak of consecutive Olympic gold medals in women's singles luge to eight.

Julia Taubitz of Germany won the women's singles luge at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, on Tuesday with a time of 3 minutes 30.625 seconds.

With the victory, Germany has now claimed gold in the event at eight consecutive Winter Olympics dating back to the 1998 Nagano Games.

Germany has dominated the discipline. Including the East and West German eras, the country had won 38 of 52 Olympic luge gold medals heading into these Games. Germany is also a bobsled powerhouse, having captured 22 of 53 bobsled gold medals through the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Germany's eight consecutive golds in women's singles luge represents the longest active winning streak by any nation in a specific Winter Olympic event.

The longest streak in Winter Olympic history belongs to Russia. Including the Soviet era, Russian pairs won 12 consecutive Olympic titles in figure skating pairs from the 1964 Innsbruck Games through the 2006 Turin Games, though the 2002 Salt Lake City gold was shared with a Canadian pair.

At the Summer Olympics, South Korea's women's archery team holds the longest active streak at 10 consecutive gold medals. The team has won every Olympic title since the event became official at the 1988 Seoul Games through the 2024 Paris Games. No other country has ever won the event.

China has matched that streak in two events. In women's 3-meter springboard diving, China won 10 consecutive titles from 1988 Seoul through 2024 Paris behind athletes including Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia. China also captured 10 straight golds in women's singles table tennis from 1988, when it became an official event, through 2024.

The United States had won 10 consecutive titles in men's 4x100-meter medley relay from the 1984 Los Angeles Games through the 2020 Tokyo Games but finished second to China at the 2024 Paris Games.
