Lindsey Vonn, the American skiing legend whose "last dance" ended in an unfortunate crash, shared her thoughts on social media following the incident.
"My Olympic dream didn't end the way I had hoped," Vonn wrote on her Instagram on February 9 local time. "The difference between a strategic line and a catastrophic injury was only 5 inches."
Vonn, a living legend of American skiing, retired in 2019 but returned in 2024 after receiving a titanium knee replacement, achieving another Olympic appearance at age 42. However, during the women's downhill event at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics on February 8 Korea time, she suffered a severe fall that resulted in a left leg fracture, ending her competition.

She was traveling at over 100 kilometers per hour when she caught a gate while navigating the second curve, tumbling across the snow before being airlifted by helicopter.
"I came in about 5 inches too tight inside my line, and my right arm got caught inside the gate, which twisted my body and led to the collision," Vonn explained.
"My previous injuries, including the ACL, had nothing to do with this accident," she added, drawing a clear line between past injuries and the current incident. "Unfortunately, I suffered a complex tibial fracture, but I'm currently in stable condition. I'll need several more surgeries to fix it properly."
Despite the outcome, Vonn focused on the journey rather than the result. "It didn't end the way I had hoped, and there was extreme physical pain, but I have no regrets," she said. "I will never forget the incredible feeling of standing at the start line."
"Just like ski racing, we take risks in life. We dream, we love, we leap. And sometimes we fall," Vonn wrote. "Sometimes our hearts break, and we don't achieve the dreams we believed we could."
"But that too is the beauty of life. Because we get to try," she concluded. "I tried, I dreamed, I leaped."
