Chris Gotterup of the United States won the PGA Tour Phoenix Open, claiming his second victory of the season.
Gotterup finished at 16-under par at TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course (par 71) in Arizona on Saturday and defeated Hideki Matsuyama of Japan in a playoff to capture the title.
Matsuyama, who had held the solo lead, struggled from his tee shot on the 18th hole (par 4), recording a bogey that forced extra holes. Gotterup then sank a birdie on the 18th hole in the playoff to lift the trophy. The winner's purse was $1,728,000.
Gotterup, who won the Sony Open last month, secured his second win of the season and fourth career PGA Tour victory. The PGA Tour has held four events this year, and Gotterup has won half of them. In terms of tournaments entered, he has two wins in three starts with back-to-back victories. Though early in the season, he is matching "Scottie Scheffler's pace."
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler of the United States shot 7-under on the day to climb into a tie for third at 15-under par, demonstrating his competitive resilience. He jumped 13 positions from the previous day. Gotterup also shot 7-under. Kim Si-woo, who shot 3-under, tied for third at 15-under par alongside Scheffler. Kim was in contention for the title but fell one stroke short of reaching the playoff.
Five players shared third place, and Kim earned $439,680 (approximately 640 million won), the same as his co-leaders. Kim, a four-time PGA Tour winner, continues his strong form this season with finishes of T-11, T-6, T-2, and T-3.
