Lindsey Vonn's fifth Olympic bid ended in heartbreak on Saturday when the 42-year-old American skiing legend crashed during the women's downhill event and was airlifted from the course.
Vonn fell approximately 10 seconds after leaving the start gate at the Tofane Alpine Ski Center in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, during the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. She collided with a gate in a technically demanding upper section, lost her balance, and tumbled nearly vertically off the course.
The four-time Olympic medalist remained on the snow for an extended period, her cries of pain audible to spectators. Medical personnel assessed her condition before deciding to transport her by helicopter. Athletes and spectators gathered at the finish line watched in stunned silence.

Vonn had been competing with a knee brace after rupturing her left anterior cruciate ligament just nine days before the Games opened. The injury occurred during a World Cup race in Switzerland on January 30 when she crashed into safety netting after a jump.
Despite the setback, Vonn traveled to Cortina d'Ampezzo and posted promising times in training runs. In her second practice session, she finished just 0.37 seconds behind leader Breezy Johnson of the United States.
The crash marks a bitter end to a storied career. Vonn holds 84 World Cup victories and three Olympic medals, including gold in the downhill at the 2010 Vancouver Games, which she won despite a shin injury suffered two weeks earlier. At the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, she claimed downhill bronze while battling severe back pain.
Vonn retired in February 2019 after chronic injuries made daily life difficult. She returned to competition in December 2024 following titanium knee replacement surgery, winning two golds, two silvers, and three bronzes on this season's World Cup circuit.
Vonn had indicated this Olympics would be her final competition.
