Veteran switch-hitter Carlos Santana, 40, will play for the Arizona Diamondbacks in Major League Baseball.
The Associated Press reported Saturday that Santana has agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with Arizona. According to the report, the deal is pending a physical examination, and the Diamondbacks have not yet made an official announcement.
Santana is a power hitter who has slugged 335 career home runs over 16 MLB seasons. He spent 11 seasons with the Cleveland Guardians, was selected to the All-Star Game in 2019, and won the Gold Glove Award at first base in 2024. Last season, he posted a .219 batting average with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs between Cleveland and the Chicago Cubs.
The signing is expected to strengthen Arizona's first base and designated hitter positions while adding depth to the middle of the lineup. MLB.com reported that "with the switch-hitting Santana, Arizona has found the complementary first baseman they were looking for this offseason to platoon with left-handed hitter Pavin Smith."
