The city of Uiwang has confirmed "Uiwang Arts Center" as the official name of the cultural and arts hall it is building, with completion targeted for the end of this year. The move replaces the working title "Uiwang Cultural and Arts Hall," used during the project's development, to more clearly convey the facility's character and standing.
According to the city on the 5th, Uiwang has proceeded with the naming process ahead of completion by comprehensively reviewing factors such as the professionalism of the performance venue, the city's identity, and the potential for brand use. In particular, the decision reflected recent trends in naming cultural and arts facilities, symbolism, external publicity effects, and the image of a high-quality performance venue. In a preference survey conducted among all city employees, "Uiwang Arts Center" received the highest support.
The new name embodies Uiwang's determination to grow beyond a simple local cultural facility into a cultural and arts hub representing the southern Seoul metropolitan area. The city expects the name to help boost brand competitiveness in attracting excellent content across various genres, including planned performances, classical concerts, and large-scale musicals.
Following the confirmation of the name, the city plans to sequentially pursue follow-up administrative procedures, such as enacting related ordinances.
"In keeping with the name 'Uiwang Arts Center,' we will create a landmark space where citizens can enjoy high-quality culture and arts in their daily lives," Uiwang Mayor Kim Sung-je said. "We will do our best to ensure that the performance venue, equipped with top-level stage facilities, is completed without a hitch at the end of 2026."
Meanwhile, the Uiwang Arts Center will be located in the area of 100-6 Gocheon-dong, Uiwang. It will be built with a total floor area of 9,924 square meters, spanning one basement level to four above-ground floors, as a complex cultural and arts facility equipped with a main performance hall, a small performance hall, and exhibition rooms.
