The establishment of Dangjin Sun Hospital (tentative name) in South Chungcheong Province is gaining momentum.
Dangjin City in South Chungcheong announced on the 29th that the "Dangjin Sun Hospital (tentative name)" construction project received approval in the preliminary review for a medical facility establishment permit from South Chungcheong Province on the 28th.
Dangjin Sun Hospital will be built with 200 beds in the Songsan No. 2 General Industrial Complex in Yugok-ri, Songsan-myeon.
The project was launched in December 2025 when Hyundai Steel resolved to make a total donation of 111 billion won to the Younghoon Medical Foundation. The Younghoon Medical Foundation applied to South Chungcheong Province for the preliminary review of the medical facility establishment permit in February.
Prior to this, the Ministry of Health and Welfare completed on June 5 its prior approval for the establishment of new beds before the opening of a general hospital under the Medical Service Act.
South Chungcheong Province conducted a comprehensive review of the bed scale and whether the medical facility establishment criteria were met through deliberation by the Medical Facility Establishment Committee. The province gave final approval to the preliminary review of the medical facility establishment permit and issued the preliminary review approval certificate.
The city plans to concentrate administrative support so that follow-up procedures, such as land purchase and master plan establishment, can be pursued swiftly.
Reflecting the regional characteristics of an area densely packed with large-scale industrial complexes, Dangjin Sun Hospital will be built as a general hospital equipped with industrial-complex-specialized medical functions such as occupational and environmental medicine. It will also feature essential medical fields including a regional emergency medical center, a cardiovascular and cerebrovascular center, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics, helping to resolve gaps in regional healthcare.
"When the general hospital opens, emergency medical care and industrial accident response capabilities will be strengthened, and citizens will be able to stably use essential medical services within the region," Dangjin Mayor Kim Ki-jae said. "We will actively provide support so that the hospital can be built in line with the 2030 opening target."
