The Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agency said on the 21st that it is searching for the owner of checks worth 30 million won found on a street in Guri.
According to police, around 10 a.m. on the 10th, two 10-million-won checks and ten 1-million-won checks were found in an envelope on a road in front of a fruit shop in Inchang-dong, Guri. A man passing by spotted the checks lying on the ground and reported them to police.
Police identified the issuing bank through information on the back of the checks. The checks were found to have been issued by Bank A on November 12 last year. However, because the checks had no endorsement with the holder's signature or name, identifying the actual holder is taking time. An endorsement is a procedure required when transferring a check to another person or verifying possession.
With the bank's cooperation, police reached a woman in her 70s, identified as B, who first issued the checks. B told police that she did not remember issuing the checks and had not recently visited Guri. Based on this, police are continuing their investigation while leaving open the possibility that the checks were circulated through several people after issuance.
Article 11 of the Enforcement Decree of the Lost Property Act stipulates that if no rightful owner appears within six months after lost property is reported, ownership transfers to the finder. If the finder waives ownership or does not claim the item within three months, the lost property reverts to the national treasury.
