Police have arrested a man who damaged the vehicle of Chung Cheong-rae, former leader of the Democratic Party of Korea.
According to police on the 22nd, the Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station arrested and questioned a man in his 50s, identified as A, on charges of property damage the previous day. A is accused of striking the vehicle of former leader Chung with his feet and tools around 7 p.m. on the 20th, as Chung was leaving a joint speech event for the party convention's preliminary primary.
Because A voluntarily reported to police, the arrest warrant was not executed. Police are reviewing whether additional charges beyond property damage can be applied. However, a police official said they could not confirm whether A is a member of any political party or whether police are considering requesting a detention warrant.
Earlier, Chung's side stated, "We inform you that a police investigation is underway," adding, "We express deep regret over the threat and violence directed at the candidate who was inside the vehicle."
