Gwangmyeong, a city in Gyeonggi Province, is building a dedicated facility to help out-of-school youth achieve self-reliance and growth.
The city announced on the 21st that it will establish the "Youth Support Center Dreum" inside the Dagam Center currently under construction in the Gwangmyeong-dong area.
As the need for tailored support for out-of-school youth grew, the city aims to provide a dedicated space equipped with self-reliance, welfare and counseling functions to help them continue their studies stably and adapt to society in a healthy way.
The Dreum Center will operate as a youth-friendly space where counseling, education, career exploration, rest and interaction are all possible in one location.
The Dagam Center spans three above-ground floors with a total floor area of 344 square meters. Following its completion in September this year and interior construction, it will begin operations in January 2027.
The first floor will be arranged as an open lounge with a book café and cafeteria, a space where any youth can freely stay and communicate. The second floor will house counseling rooms and offices, handling counseling and administrative functions. The third-floor education room will run programs for General Educational Development (GED) exam preparation, career education and hands-on experience.
Park Seung-won, mayor of Gwangmyeong, said, "We will create an environment in which the local community warmly embraces all youth so that they do not lose their dreams and can nurture their potential." He added, "We will spare no support to ensure the Dreum Center becomes a shelter and a reliable safety net for out-of-school youth."
Meanwhile, the Dagam Center, where the Dreum Center will be located, is part of an urban regeneration project. It utilizes 12 billion won in state funding that Gwangmyeong secured in 2022 after being selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's project to support infrastructure development in small-scale housing improvement management zones.
