Yeoncheon, a border county in the northernmost part of Gyeonggi Province, will be filled with classical melodies.
Yeoncheon County announced on the 20th that it will hold the "2026 13th Yeoncheon DMZ International Music Festival" from the 27th of this month through August 3 at Yeoncheon Sureul Art Hall and the Baekhak Jayuro Resort area.
Now in its 13th year, the festival has grown beyond a simple regional event. As an international classical festival where world-renowned performers and young musicians share the stage, it has established itself as the signature cultural brand of Yeoncheon, a DMZ border region where peace and arts coexist.
This year, the symbolism of "peace" is especially strong as the festival coincides with the 73rd anniversary of the armistice. That is why the opening concert on the 27th, which announces the festival's start, is being staged to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the armistice.
The Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, along with violinist-conductor Maxim Fedotov, pianist Alexander Kobrin, and cellist Song Young-hoon, will ring out melodies of harmony at the site of division.
The festival's strength lies in its structure spanning generations. The DMZIMF Faculty Concerts (July 29 and August 1), featuring top-tier faculty from home and abroad, and recitals by world-class pianists will continue, while future musicians are discovered through the international competition and master classes. In this way, it has developed into a venue for international cultural exchange connecting world-renowned artists with emerging musicians.
The combination of nature and art is another distinctive color of this festival. The summer concert "On a Starry Night," held on the 31st at the outdoor special stage of the Baekhak Jayuro Resort, is considered a signature program for enjoying classical music amid nature on a midsummer night. The Mir Symphony Orchestra, Maxim Fedotov, and pianist Galina Petrova will fill the stage.
The eight-day journey will conclude on August 3 with the competition awards ceremony and the final gala concert "Cinema Classica."
"This is a signature cultural and arts festival that brings world-class classical music close to residents, as well as an international event that shares the values of peace and art," Yeoncheon County Mayor Kim Deok-hyun said. "I hope many residents and tourists will enjoy high-quality performances together with Yeoncheon's nature and culture."
