
Scientists from around the world who explore the structure and reactions of rare atomic nuclei will gather in Daejeon.
The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) announced on the 20th that its Center for Exotic Nuclear Studies and the Institute for Rare Isotope Science (IRIS) will hold the "IBS Conference on Exotic Nuclei" from July 22 to 24 at the IBS Science Culture Center and the Institute for Rare Isotope Science (IRIS) in Daejeon.
The IBS Conference is a leading international academic event in the basic science community, where world-renowned scholars and major researchers in each field gather to share the latest research achievements and trends. IBS has been holding conferences by basic science research field since 2013 to expand exchanges among domestic and international researchers and to strengthen international research collaboration networks.
A total of 23 leading domestic and international scholars in the field of rare nuclei will participate as speakers, including Faical Azaiez, director of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics-Legnaro National Laboratories (INFN-LNL) in Italy, and Dean Lee, a world-renowned scholar in theoretical nuclear physics and professor at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University in the United States.
The speakers will present the latest research achievements in nuclear physics, including the structure and reactions of rare nuclei and the generation of rare isotope beams. They will also introduce nuclear physics research utilizing deep learning and artificial intelligence-based models.
In particular, the event will feature a tour session offering a direct look at Korea's heavy-ion accelerator "RAON." RAON is a super-large accelerator used to identify the fundamental properties of rare nuclei and to research the origins of various elements existing in the universe. The event will share RAON's operational status and beam commissioning results, and will hold discussions to identify new research topics to be pursued based on RAON going forward.
Han In-sik, director of the IBS Center for Exotic Nuclear Studies, said, "This will serve as an opportunity to activate research using RAON and to expand collaboration with rare nuclei researchers worldwide."
