Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, has launched a "communication administration" initiative that opens the city's governing process directly to residents.
According to Namyangju on the 17th, the city held the first city policy meeting of its ninth elected government the previous day at the Jinjeop-Onam Administrative Welfare Center and livestreamed the entire meeting in real time on the city's official channels. The move marked the start of a "citizen sovereignty era" in which the process of discussing and implementing policy is shared with residents.
The meeting was carried out in connection with the newly launched "On-Site Mayor's Office." The city reorganized its existing executive meetings into city policy meetings and decided to hold them regularly on the 1st of each month to enhance transparency in city administration.
The initiative reflects the governing philosophy of Mayor Choi Hyun-deok, who emphasizes on-site communication and citizen participation. Since taking office, Choi has continued to visit major institutions and inspect daily-life sites, stressing field-centered administration. On the same day, he held a "Let's Meet the Mayor" session to directly hear local issues and suggestions from the Jinjeop-eup area.
The meeting that followed shared key issues and major policy progress by department. Officials also reviewed disaster response measures for summer heat waves and torrential rains.
To realize a "well-performing local government," Choi called for executive officials to study policy and future trends, to improve inefficient work and strengthen one-team administration, to take preemptive action on the three mega-projects and the future response fund, and to reinforce responses to summer natural disasters.
"Sharing the process of discussing and implementing city administration together with citizens is administration befitting the citizen sovereignty era," Mayor Choi Hyun-deok said. "By putting execution ahead of convention and results ahead of formality, we will realize a well-performing local government that creates change residents can feel."
Going forward, the city plans to livestream the entire meeting on the 1st of each month to share major policy progress with residents.
