A civic group has filed a criminal complaint with prosecutors against top police officials and the interior minister who oversees them, over allegations of a "lenient investigation" surrounding the case of Jang Yoon-gi, the killer of a female high school student in Gwangju.
According to the Citizens' Countermeasure Committee for the People's Livelihood on the 14th, the group submitted a complaint to prosecutors requesting an investigation into how the father of Jang Yoon-gi, an incumbent senior police officer, made dozens of phone calls with the investigation team handling the case and even had key evidence destroyed.
Those named in the complaint include Interior Minister Yoon Ho-jung, acting National Police Agency Commissioner General Yoo Jae-sung, current and former chiefs of the National Office of Investigation and its criminal affairs bureau director, the Gwangju Police Agency chief and its investigation and criminal affairs division heads, and the chief and criminal affairs section head of the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station.
The group claimed these individuals face allegations including distortion of law, dereliction of duty, and abuse of authority.
The case, received by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, was transferred to the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, which has booked investigation officials in the Jang Yoon-gi case, including the Gwangsan Police Station chief and criminal affairs section head, as suspects.
