The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has received a total of 175 complaints since the introduction of the crime of distorting the law, closing 75 of them while investigating 100, it was found. None of the closed cases have been referred to prosecutors, according to the tally.
Park Jung-ho, Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, said at a regular press briefing on the morning of the 13th regarding the status of complaints related to the crime of distorting the law, "So far 175 cases have been received, of which 75 have been closed, and 100 are currently under investigation."
Police officers were the most common subjects at 203 people. They were followed by judges, prosecutors, prosecution investigators, and other public officials.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency explained that it is exercising caution in its investigations, as the crime of distorting the law is a newly established offense.
Commissioner Park said, "As it is a newly established punishment provision, we are conducting investigations more cautiously while fully considering the intent of the legislation."
Among the 75 closed cases, not a single one has been referred to prosecutors. In terms of case processing status, there were 48 non-referral decisions, 8 dismissals without prosecution, 17 transfers to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, and 2 transfers to other city and provincial police agencies.
A Seoul Metropolitan Police official explained regarding the dismissed cases that they were "cases filed based only on vague assumptions or media reports, without presenting specific allegations."
