A man in his 60s was arrested by police for drunkenly rampaging and smashing property at a restaurant in Seoul's Jongno district in broad daylight.
According to reporting by The Seoul Economic Daily on the 11th, the Hyehwa Police Station arrested a man in his 60s, identified as A, at the scene on the 9th of this month on charges of property destruction and questioned him.
A is accused of causing a disturbance by successively smashing items inside a restaurant in Sungin-dong, Jongno district, Seoul, that afternoon. Police were dispatched after receiving a report that "a drunk man is rampaging and smashing everything in sight," and arrested A at the scene at around 4:10 p.m. No one was reported injured in the process.
During police questioning, A was confirmed to have stated, in effect, that he committed the acts without any particular reason. The man, who was intoxicated at the time of the offense, continued to cause a disturbance for some time even after being taken to the police station, shouting loudly and resisting police attempts to restrain him. However, police did not apply additional charges such as obstruction of official duties, taking into account the circumstances at the time.
Police questioned A on property destruction charges and then released him, and plan to refer the case to prosecutors without detention once the investigation is complete. Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident and the scale of the damage.
