An active-duty police officer is under investigation on suspicion of trading investigation-related information with an informant during a drug probe.
Seoul Gangdong Police Station said on the 10th that it is investigating Inspector A, formerly of the drug investigation team in the criminal affairs division of Seoul Gwangjin Police Station, on suspicion of dealing with B, an informant who is also a suspect in a drug crime, on charges including leaking official secrets.
The allegations against Inspector A came to light while a drug crime investigation unit at another provincial police agency was investigating B as a suspect, according to reports. Signs of trading investigation information were detected in text message records between Inspector A and B.
The chief of Gwangjin Police Station placed Inspector A on standby duty on the 2nd of this month. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, after being notified of the matter, suspended Inspector A effective the same day.
Police plan to establish the facts by searching and seizing Inspector A's mobile phone and to review whether to seek an arrest warrant.
