The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City said on the 9th that it will begin full-scale implementation of a smart farm demonstration project based on artificial intelligence (AI) agrivoltaics. Following the selection of the project "Development and Demonstration of Zero-Carbon AI-Linked Smart Farm Technology Based on Agrivoltaics," supported by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the city plans to build a next-generation smart farm model that combines agricultural production with renewable energy generation.
The project will run for three years from July 2026 to March 2029, with a total budget of 22.4 billion won. Its core objective is to develop light-transmitting solar modules for greenhouse roofs and sidewalls, along with an AI-based integrated environment and energy operation platform. Demonstrations will take place at the Goheung Smart Farm Innovation Valley and the Gangjin Art Farm.
Through the project, the city expects to reduce smart farm energy costs, diversify farm household income, cut carbon emissions in agriculture, and expand renewable energy-based agricultural infrastructure.
