The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police will crack down on illegal activities at emission businesses in designated odor control zones, in preparation for an increase in odor complaints during the summer season.
The special judicial police said it will conduct an intensive crackdown for two weeks from August 3 to 14, targeting 120 odor-emitting businesses, including manufacturers and sewage and wastewater treatment facilities, in six cities designated as odor control zones in the province: Ansan, Siheung, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, Yongin, and Osan.
The crackdown will focus on sites requiring priority management, such as businesses with recurring odor complaints or a history of violating relevant laws. Odor control zones are areas designated and publicly announced under the Odor Prevention Act as requiring special management due to persistent and widespread odor occurrences.
Key inspection items include the installation and operation of unreported odor-emitting facilities, compliance with measures under odor prevention plans, improper operation of air and water pollution prevention facilities, and improper storage and disposal of waste. Installing or operating an odor-emitting facility without reporting to the competent authority can result in imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won. Failure to implement measures under an odor prevention plan is also subject to a fine of up to 3 million won.
"Odor is a leading living-environment complaint that directly affects the health and living conditions of residents," said Kwon Mun-ju, head of the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police. "Through this summer's intensive crackdown, we will create a pleasant environment where residents can live with peace of mind."
