Gimpo Mayor Vows All-Out Effort for Incheon Line 2 Extension

Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, has stepped up cooperation to pass the preliminary feasibility study for the project to extend Incheon Metro Line 2 to Goyang.

Gimpo Mayor Lee Ki-hyung inspected the area around Geolpo Bukbyeon Station on the 9th together with Kim Yong-seok, chairman of the Metropolitan Transport Commission, and lawmakers Kim Joo-young and Park Sang-hyuk (both of Gimpo) and Lee Ki-heon (Goyang), and discussed cooperation measures.

At the meeting, Mayor Lee shared the status of the preliminary feasibility study and discussed cooperation measures on follow-up procedures, including future review meetings and subcommittee operations. In particular, Lee emphasized the need for the commission's support and expressed his determination to respond actively to the remaining administrative procedures.

"The project to extend Incheon Line 2 to Goyang is a key project that strengthens the north-south transportation network in the northwestern metropolitan area separated by the Han River," Lee said. "I request active cooperation from Incheon City, Goyang City and the Metropolitan Transport Commission so that the preliminary feasibility study can be passed as soon as possible." He added, "Gimpo City will also do its utmost to ensure the project proceeds smoothly."

The project to extend Incheon Line 2 to Goyang is a wide-area railway project connecting Dokjeong Station in Incheon to KINTEX in Goyang via Geolpo Bukbyeon Station in Gimpo. It will build 12 stations and one rolling stock depot over a total length of 19.63 kilometers, with total project costs of approximately 2.083 trillion won expected to be invested.

Once the line opens, travel time to Seoul Station is expected to be significantly shortened by transferring at KINTEX to the Great Train Express (GTX)-A, improving transportation accessibility in the northwestern metropolitan area.

The preliminary feasibility study for the Incheon Line 2 extension to Goyang has been underway since November 2023. Gimpo City plans to actively engage in continued consultations with relevant agencies, along with Incheon City and Goyang City, to ensure the project proceeds smoothly.
