The Korea National Railway (KR) said Wednesday that its volunteer corps carried out a 'Voluntour' in the Chungcheong region on Tuesday, joined by children from the Daejeon Dong-gu Regional Children's Center Association and partner organizations including Sh Suhyup Bank.
Voluntour is a hands-on social contribution program that combines volunteering and tourism.
After successfully operating a railway Voluntour using the Donghae Line last year, KR this year expanded the scope to the Chungcheong region. Together with the Daejeon Dong-gu Regional Children's Center Association, Sh Suhyup Bank and the Taean Coast National Park Office, it organized a hands-on social contribution activity reflecting local characteristics.
Participants conducted a plogging activity around Gomseom Island in Taean-gun, South Chungcheong Province, collecting trash discarded along the coast and learning about and practicing marine environment conservation firsthand.
They then visited KR's facility and equipment office in Osong-eup, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, where they toured catenary-free trams and railway maintenance equipment. Participants experienced the operating principles and maintenance processes of railway facilities firsthand, gaining a closer look at the railway industry and exploring future career paths.
"I hope the children can think about a better future through today's environmental protection efforts and grow bigger dreams through their experience at railway sites," said Lee An-ho, acting chairman of the Korea National Railway.
