Youngsan University has launched an initiative to train future experts in Korean language and culture education.
According to the university on Monday, 70 students and faculty members from its Department of Korean Language and Culture Education recently conducted the "Tongyeong Literature and Cultural Arts Tour" program in the Tongyeong area.
The program is part of the South Gyeongsang RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) project. It focused on helping students directly experience Korean literature and local cultural content to build practical skills they can use in future Korean language and culture education settings.
Participants toured the Cheongma Literature Museum, the Jeon Hyuck-lim Art Museum, the Dongpirang Mural Village, and the Park Kyung-ni Memorial Hall in sequence, experiencing firsthand the value of modern Korean literature and local cultural arts. In particular, they gained an understanding of the historical backdrop of Korean literature through the works of poet Cheongma Yu Chi-hwan and novelist Park Kyung-ni's novel "Land," and examined the process by which local culture is realized as art through the works of painter Jeon Hyuck-lim.
At the Dongpirang Mural Village, students also carried out cultural documentation activities in groups. They analyzed cultural content combining local living culture and tourism culture, and explored ways to use it in Korean culture education.
"In Korean language education, it is important to convey not only the language but also Korean culture and local values together," said Lee Hyang-sook, a professor in the Department of Korean Language and Culture Education. "We will continue to expand cultural experience programs linked with local communities to train Korean culture education experts who will be active both at home and abroad."
