Gunpo City has completed a special inspection of the Dangdong underpass in preparation for heavy summer rains.
Gunpo City said Tuesday that it conducted a joint special inspection with the Gunpo Police Station and the Gunpo Fire Station to prevent flooding accidents at the Dangdong underpass ahead of the full onset of the rainy season.
The inspection was arranged to respond preemptively to the risk of underpass flooding as localized heavy downpours have become more frequent recently. The city focused on checking the safety management status of flood-vulnerable facilities and reviewing the on-site cooperation system with related agencies such as police and fire authorities.
About 30 people took part in the inspection, including Gunpo City's construction division head and road facilities team leader, along with officials from the Gunpo Police Station and Gunpo Fire Station. Participants verified at the Dangdong underpass site whether the entry-blocking facilities that stop vehicles from entering during flooding were operational. They also checked the status of the remote control system and the operation of drainage pumps.
The operation of emergency generators for emergency situations, the dredging condition of catch basins, and the management status of drainage channels were also included among the key inspection targets. The related agencies checked the life rescue response system in the event of flooding and reviewed traffic control measures in advance to prevent further damage.
Gunpo City explained that the inspection reaffirmed the cooperation system among related agencies before the rainy season. It also plans to take immediate action if insufficient or areas requiring improvement are found, in order to prevent safety accidents.
Gunpo Mayor Han Dae-hee said, "Underpass flooding accidents can lead to major casualties in an instant," adding, "Thorough preparation in advance and a swift initial response are more important than anything else."
He continued, "We will work closely with the Gunpo Police Station and Gunpo Fire Station and do our utmost to strengthen on-site response capabilities so that we can protect the lives and property of citizens even during this summer's heavy rains."
