An international symposium heralding the "2027 First Island Biennale" will be held.
The Island Biennale Organizing Committee announced Sunday that it will hold "Horizon of Art," a pre-event international symposium for the 2027 First Island Biennale, on July 9-10 in the area of Wonsando and Boryeong Mud Theme Park in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province.
Ahead of the 2027 First Island Biennale, the event serves as a venue for international artistic exchange aimed at defining the biennale's identity and vision and building a global network.
Site visits to planned exhibition venues, including the Wonsando Island Culture and Art Platform, along with advisory meetings, will take place on July 9. The symposium will be held on July 10 from 1:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Convention Hall at Boryeong Mud Theme Park.
In the presentation session, overseas public art cases will be introduced, including Taiwan's Matsu Biennial, Japan's Biwako Biennale, and Quebec, Canada's EXMURO arts publics, which share environments similar to the Island Biennale, along with major domestic cases such as the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, the Sea Art Festival, and the Changwon Sculpture Biennale. Participating experts will discuss the role and future direction of a biennale that connects islands and art, and regions and the world.
Following the theme presentations, a comprehensive Q&A and discussion will follow, involving six presenters and centered on moderator Lim Jae-gwang, an art critic and honorary professor at Kongju National University. The plan is to examine the challenges that must be supplemented and overcome for the successful hosting of the First Island Biennale, and to draw out the identity the Island Biennale should pursue and the direction of public art projects.
In addition, a portfolio review introducing artists from the South Chungcheong region to invited domestic and international experts, as well as an expert networking session, will be held beforehand.
