The Korea Manhwa Contents Agency said Monday it is holding a contest for elementary, middle and high school students nationwide, as well as out-of-school youth, to broaden the base of comics culture and nurture the next generation of creators.
Now in its 27th edition, the National Student Comics Contest is a youth comics competition that has been held annually since 2000. It has established itself as a venue where students dreaming of becoming cartoonists express their thoughts and experiences through their work and showcase their creative abilities.
The contest is divided into "panel comics" for the elementary division, and "webtoons" and "cartoons" for the middle and high school divisions. The subject matter is open, and submissions must be unpublished, purely original works created by the entrants themselves.
Judging will be handled by a selection committee composed of experts and officials from relevant organizations. The grand prize winner will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award. In addition, a total of 49 winners will be selected for awards including the Gyeonggi Province Governor's Award, the Bucheon Mayor's Award, and the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency Chairman's Award.
Submissions will be accepted from July 20 to August 17. Detailed information and submission methods can be found on "M-Good."
"I have high expectations about what original and outstanding works will draw attention this year," said Baek Jong-hun, head of the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency. "I hope this contest will serve as a stepping stone for young people to move toward their dreams."
