Natural burial grounds at Daejeon Memorial Park are set to expand.
The Daejeon city government said Thursday that it is pushing forward with a project to build a third natural burial ground at Daejeon Memorial Park, targeting completion in 2027.
The city will build 24,000 natural burial plots across a project area of 49,500 square meters to meet growing demand for natural burials. New natural burial grounds are needed as the currently available plots at Daejeon Memorial Park are nearing full capacity.
The city plans to first build a first batch of 800 natural burial plots by the end of this year, then proceed with the project in phases to complete the entire project by 2027.
"We expect this to contribute to spreading an eco-friendly funeral culture, expanding citizens' options for funeral services, creating a pleasant memorial environment, and improving citizen welfare," a city official said.
