Police have launched a dedicated investigation team after signs of evidence tampering were confirmed within the police unit that had investigated the murder of a high school girl in Gwangju. The head of the investigation team at Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, who handled the case at the time, was placed under emergency arrest.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency said Thursday it had formed a 22-member dedicated investigation team led by the head of its investigation division to look into various allegations raised during the investigation of the Gwangju schoolgirl murder case.
While verifying the facts, the investigation team confirmed some signs of evidence tampering and made an emergency arrest of the Gwangsan Police Station investigation team leader who had handled the case at the time, at around 7:11 a.m. that day.
Police plan to investigate the precise circumstances involving the team leader while also pursuing a rigorous investigation into all related parties, including team members who took part in the investigation at the time.
"We will conduct a thorough investigation so that not a single doubt remains, not only regarding the allegations raised in the media but across the entire investigation process," an official from the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency said.
