Actor Park Shin-yang is meeting audiences as a painter. The Incheon Culture and Arts Center is holding "The Fourth Wall," its first special invitational exhibition since reopening, from June 9 through August 2. Admission is free throughout the entire period.
The exhibition features about 120 of Park's paintings. He picked up the brush for 14 years without any formal art education. He is credited with carving out a distinct territory in the art world through an expressionist style that relentlessly probes his subjects and transfers inner intensity onto the canvas.
The exhibition title "The Fourth Wall" is a theatrical term referring to the invisible boundary that separates the stage from the audience. It reflects the artist's view of art as something to share rather than to own. Indeed, Park has not sold a single original work despite painting more than 200 pieces over 14 years. He has met audiences only through exhibitions.
The exhibition has also broadened its scope. "Art·T Incheon," a special section showcasing works from the Incheon Foundation for Arts and Culture's Incheon Art Bank collection, runs alongside from June 17 to 24 in the Michuhol Exhibition Hall. All net proceeds from merchandise sales will go to "Art Rain," a donation program of the Incheon Foundation for Arts and Culture that supports local artists.
"Art & Talk," in which Park serves as docent himself, will be held twice during the exhibition period. Detailed schedules will be announced on the center's website.
Viewing hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last admission is at 5:30 p.m., and visitors aged 8 and older may attend.
