Son Hun-mo, mayor of Suncheon in the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, gave up his holiday to conduct on-site inspections in preparation for concentrated monsoon rainfall. The move reflects Son's strong commitment to placing "citizen safety" as his top priority.
According to Suncheon on Saturday, Mayor Son personally examined disaster-vulnerable sites, including underground roadways and river facilities within the city, to prepare for the approaching monsoon, and inspected areas at risk of urban flooding. For underground roadways, he ordered constant inspections for issues such as blocked drains, and instructed that thorough advance controls and vehicle evacuation systems be activated immediately before flooding risks arise, in order to minimize damage.
"Based on the values of 'citizen sovereignty and an open Suncheon that communicates,' I will make citizen safety my first priority," Mayor Son said. "During concentrated rainfall, I ask citizens to refrain from entering hazardous areas and to actively cooperate with disaster safety guidance."
Earlier, prioritizing citizen safety, Son made "advance inspection of summer natural disaster safety measures" his first signed order upon taking office. His first task was also to convene an emergency response meeting to prepare for the monsoon, leading operations on the ground for citizen safety.
Meanwhile, as the central government has recently emphasized proactive responses by local governments and inspections of vulnerable facilities in preparation for the full monsoon season, Suncheon is concentrating its administrative resources on major risk factors, including river facilities, sewer facilities, drainage pumping stations, disaster-prone areas, urban flood prevention facilities, and construction sites.
