Two people died Thursday morning after three vehicles collided in succession near the Gangneung Junction (JC) on the Yeongdong Expressway in Gangneung, Gangwon Province.
According to police, three vehicles, including a Rexton passenger car and a refrigerated truck, crashed one after another at around 4:47 a.m. at the 232-kilometer point (from the Incheon starting point) of the Yeongdong Expressway heading toward Gangneung, in Sagimak-ri, Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung. Two people, a man in his 30s and a man in his 60s, died at the scene.
Police believe the crash led to a secondary accident when another vehicle struck a Rexton passenger car that had been parked on the shoulder, and are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
Police plan to secure closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the accident scene and witness statements to confirm the movement routes of each vehicle and the circumstances of the collision.
