The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency will directly investigate allegations that Chung Mong-gyu, president of the Korea Football Association, improperly intervened in the appointments of former national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann and current national team head coach Hong Myung-bo.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Regional Investigation Unit announced Monday through a press notice that it would transfer the complaint case against Chung and others, which had been handled by the Jongno Police Station, to the Financial Crime Investigation Squad of the agency's Regional Investigation Unit. The decision was made in consideration of the importance of the matter.
Since July 2024, the Jongno Police Station had received eight complaints alleging that Chung, former technical director Lee Lim-saeng, and other football association officials intervened in the process of appointing coaches Klinsmann and Hong.
Police had proceeded with the investigation, but no conclusion has been reached even now, two years later. Instead, a first-instance administrative court ruling on the same issue came first. Chung and coach Hong had also expressed their intention to resign.
In connection with this, a Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency official said at a regular press briefing on Oct. 29 that "a first-instance ruling in the administrative lawsuit came out in April, and it was necessary to watch the trial proceedings."
