The Samil Cultural Foundation is seeking nominees for the 68th Samil Cultural Awards, honoring individuals who have contributed to the advancement of scholarship, the arts, and science and technology.
The foundation will accept nominations for the awards, to be presented on next year's March 1 Independence Movement Day, through September 10, it said Wednesday. The nomination categories are the Academic Award for humanities and social sciences, the Academic Award for natural sciences, the Arts Award, and the Technology and Engineering Award. Following review, the foundation plans to announce the winners in each category on January 8 next year. Recipients will receive a plaque and 100 million won in prize money.
The Samil Cultural Award was the first academic and cultural award in Korea, established in 1959 by Korea Cement Industrial Co. This later led to the founding of the Samil Cultural Foundation in 1966, and the award is currently supported by Korea Petrochemical Industry. In addition to the Samil Cultural Award, the foundation provides the Samil Scholarship to cultivate future talent. It also carries out a range of public-interest projects, including support for producing DAISY files for the visually impaired, support for multicultural mothers' schools, and the publication of the "Good Morning Good Night" series, a collection of humanities and general-education books featuring outstanding titles for distribution.
