North Gyeongsang Province said Toray Advanced Materials Korea has completed the expansion of its second meta-aramid fiber line at its No. 1 plant in Gumi and held a completion ceremony, the province announced Tuesday.
The expansion adds 3,000 tons of annual capacity. With this addition, Toray Advanced Materials Korea now has total annual meta-aramid fiber production capacity of 5,400 tons, including its existing production lines.
Meta-aramid fiber is a super fiber with exceptional heat resistance that maintains its properties even at high temperatures above 200 degrees, along with flame retardancy and superior electrical insulation.
Demand is expanding across various industrial sectors, including power infrastructure, future mobility, defense, and industrial safety.
In particular, its role is growing as the stability and efficiency of power equipment become more important amid the recent expansion of the artificial intelligence (AI) and data center markets.
About 100 people attended the completion ceremony, including Toray Advanced Materials Korea Chairman Quno Motohisa, CEO Kim Young-sub, North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheol-woo, and Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho.
"Advanced materials are the engine of future industries and the root of competitiveness," Governor Lee said. "We will secure leadership in future high-tech industries by linking the high-performance materials produced by Toray Advanced Materials Korea with defense, secondary batteries, and semiconductors."
