A body found at a public recycling facility in Incheon is presumed to belong to an adult, according to findings from the National Forensic Service.
The forensic service conducted an examination of the partial remains found on Wednesday and notified police that the body was "presumed to be an adult standing 161 to 165 centimeters tall," the Incheon Yeonsu Police Station said Saturday.
Based on these findings, police plan to proceed with the investigation on the assumption that the victim was likely an adult rather than a young student.
As various unverified rumors spread online regarding the case, police stated that the content "has not been confirmed as fact." Police urged people to refrain from sharing such material, saying, "The indiscriminate spread of related content can hinder the investigation," and that "those involved could be punished for charges including defamation of named parties."
At around 2:28 p.m. on Wednesday, part of a human left leg wrapped in bandages was found at the Southern Regional Resource Recovery Center in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. A worker sorting recyclables was found to have first discovered the remains and reported them. At the time of discovery, police measured the body parts at a foot size of 210 millimeters and a length of 41 centimeters from below the knee to the heel.
Police formed an investigation headquarters comprising 64 investigators and launched a probe. They have identified 34 vehicles that brought recyclables into the center on the day of the discovery and are tracking their movements. Police are also focusing their efforts on confirming the victim's identity through DNA comparison with missing persons and analysis of nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
