The semiconductor boom centered on Samsung Electronics and SK hynix is transforming Korean society across culture, consumption, education and the real estate market, according to an analysis.
The New York Times recently reported that the sharply rising stature of Korea's semiconductor industry has spawned a flood of new buzzwords and internet memes reflecting the trend.
The newspaper noted that "semiconductors are at the center of the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom, and Korea is one of the key supplier nations," adding that Korean companies, which have secured overwhelming competitiveness in the memory chip market, have emerged as symbols of the nation's economic future.
The NYT introduced expressions trending online such as "Samjeonnix" (Samsung Electronics + SK hynix), "Sam-men/Ha-men" (Samsung Electronics/SK hynix + Amen), and "silicon collar." The report explained that as semiconductor company employees become objects of envy on the back of high salaries and performance bonuses, new cultural codes referring to them are taking shape.
It also spotlighted the phenomenon of work vests bearing the SK hynix logo being consumed as a symbol of success. The NYT referenced a segment from the Coupang Play variety show "SNL Korea" released in April, reporting that a setup in which an ordinary-looking character is treated differently by those around once he puts on an SK hynix vest drew significant attention. Online, the report said, the vest even inspired jokes calling it "the best outfit for a blind date."

The influence of the semiconductor industry is also appearing in the real estate market. The NYT reported that as the proportion of semiconductor company employees among recent homebuyers grows, the expression "semiconductor belt"—referring to apartments near the Samsung Electronics and SK hynix commuter bus routes—has even emerged.
In fact, Bloomberg Economics recently forecast in a report that the scale of performance bonuses that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix employees can convert into cash could grow from 4 trillion won in 2026 to around 30 trillion won in 2028. The market views it as highly likely that these funds will flow not only into the stock market but also into the real estate markets of residential areas linked to the semiconductor industry, such as Yongin, Dongtan and Suwon.
Changes in the education sector are also notable. The NYT introduced the new term "Ha-ui-chi-han-yak-su" currently used in the college admissions industry. The expression groups together SK hynix and medical, dental, oriental medicine, pharmacy and veterinary schools. The analysis suggests it shows how the growth of the AI industry and the rising status of semiconductor companies are influencing the career choices of top-tier students.
The NYT assessed that "in Korea, where internet culture is highly developed, memes and new words are indicators that reflect the social mood," adding that "one of the keywords describing Korean society in 2026 is undoubtedly the semiconductor craze."
