Police investigating allegations involving a tax broker known as a close associate of Geonjin monk Jeon Sung-bae have launched a compulsory investigation into the Seoul Regional Tax Office.
The Special Investigation Headquarters, which is handling the remaining cases from the three special counsel probes, said in a notice to the press Tuesday that "it executed a search and seizure warrant on the Seoul Regional Tax Office for two hours starting at 10:30 a.m. today, in connection with charges including violation of the Attorney-at-Law Act by Roh, an aide to Jeon."
Roh, known as a close associate of Jeon, is suspected of receiving money and valuables in 2023 from a delivery agency that was under tax investigation by the Seoul Regional Tax Office, in return for quashing the probe, while boasting of his ties with former President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife.
At the time, tax authorities had given notice of a 200 billion won tax collection against the company through an irregular tax audit. However, the company filed for a pre-taxation review, and the collection was canceled.
Police plan to secure documents and computer files to examine whether Roh exercised influence during the litigation process to cancel the tax collection.
