Cheonan, a city in South Chungcheong Province, is being developed into a safe water environment city.
South Chungcheong Province announced Tuesday that Cheonan has been selected for the "Urban Water Cycle Promotion Zone" contest organized by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, with a total of 97.4 billion won to be invested over five years.
In a water cycle vulnerability assessment conducted by the ministry, Cheonan ranked as the most vulnerable area in comprehensive vulnerability indicators, including water use vulnerability and water cycle distortion, and is a region where heavy rain damage occurs frequently every year.
The province and Cheonan will establish a water cycle management system to secure stable water supplies and prepare preemptive measures against water-related disasters. They will pursue projects including the Wonseongcheon water cycle improvement (39.7 billion won), the renovation of aging water and sewage pipes (24.4 billion won), and urban flood prevention in Seongjeong 1-dong (20.9 billion won).
"We will ensure that residents of South Chungcheong Province can live their lives in pleasant waterfront spaces," said Kim Young-myung, director-general of the province's Environment and Forest Bureau.
